Student Feature 2: Belicia Lim

Hi everybody! Welcome back! Are you excited to know which student we'll be featuring this week?

Today's showcase will center on none other than Belicia Lim.

DMC STUDENT OF THE WEEK: BELICIA LIM

Like our previous featured student, Belicia is also a year 2 Design & Illustration student. The multi-talented girl started designing when she first held a pencil. Ever since she was young, she has had a strong passion for the Arts. Throughout the years of her life, she has explored areas in Contemporary Dance and piano. However, her love for visual arts has always remained the strongest.

In Year 1, she was awarded the Director's Honours Roll 2010 for her outstanding performance in school work.

Besides being an outstanding artist, Belicia is also a great dancer. She is the Captain for Modern Dance in SP Dance Club. She has also performed for SP's dance concert, WAVES
From the picture above, you can tell that her moves are pretty sharp and graceful.

Do you find Belicia familiar? Its not surprising if you do! She was one of the "Faces of Singapore Polytechnic, Open House 2012”. You can check out her videos at aspirations.sg

MORE ABOUT BELICIA

What is your alma mater?
      Kranji Secondary School

What do you love most about DMC and CASS?
Well firstly, I love the fact that we are such a tightly knitted group. Ever since I’ve stepped into DMC, I’ve seen a variety of unique individuals that have opened my mindset towards life and various perspectives. Our lecturers are also very approachable. As previously mentioned, as we are a small course of 5 classes, our lecturers know almost all of us. Somehow I find that pretty cool.
-       My views towards DMC is similar towards CASS. CASS is basically a fun bunch of quirks and laughter. We’re all so unique as individuals, and I like that fact that we’re a small school. We’re young, yet vibrant.

Which is your favourite Foodcourt/food stall in SP? Why?
FOODCOURT THREE! The best tasting food are all combined in that foodcourt! (WAFFLES, CHEESEFRIES, FRIED RICE, HAND MADE NOODLES, KOREAN FOOD), but I LOVE their fried rice the best. It’s definitely value for money because their servings are SO BIG!

What is your favourite hangout/study place in SP? Why?
Well, sadly ever since the Hangout closed down, I feel like a nomad. But I will still say my NEW favourite hangout place will be starbucks at Foodcourt 5. It is very cosy, and I love the ambience. It may be the coffee, but my project works are often completed efficiently in starbucks!

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

Life is like riding a bicycle. We just need to find the right balance in order to go the distance.

Heardatdmc is sure that Belicia has a bright path ahead. To explore the CCAs and hobbies SP cultivates, do find out more about the polytechnic. Just like Belicia, you could be pursuing your passions and interests with SP DMC. With SP, it's so possible :)

Don't stop here! This is only the beginning. Come back and keep reading to find out more about DMC's outstanding students!

Open House Is Over – What Happens Next?

You have visited all the polytechnics you are interested in, squeezed out every single piece of information you could out of the helpful course counsellors you met there,  curiously and exhaustedly toured around the buildings which somehow all looked the same eventually,  then you ask yourself the big question. What now?

Well, of course, there is the upcoming Joint Admissions Exercise you would have to take part in, I reckon there would be more than the doubts surrounding the issue of - “Which school do I choose now?”

To help you worried people ease your doubts, I will first share with you a few tips on the JAE for polytechnic admission.

For students who have been very enthusiastic about Co-Curricular Activities in your secondary school, you can rejoice at all the effort put into your CCA now! As you can see from the diagram below (extracted from www.polytechnic.edu.sg), GCE O Level holders actually get a bonus of up to two points awarded for a high CCA grade!

Of course, now that you are aware of how many bonus points you are awarded for you CCA, it is time to sit down and think through the choices you make.

As a piece of advice, I think it is always better to consult a knowledgeable friend, maybe a teacher or even Mummy and Daddy. Also, do take into consideration the advice given by the friendly course counsellors or lecturers you have met during the open house. Scrutinise the course modules to choose a diploma course that you can see yourself doing for the next three years.

If you are afraid you cannot make the grade for eligibility for polytechnic courses, there is always the Joint Polytechnic Special Admissions Exercise. According to the same polytechnic guide above polytechnics do allow enrolment of students with strong aptitudes (with great work attachments, involvement in course-related projects and performance in academic competitions). Not forgetting the others with great talent or achievements in leadership, community service, entrepreneurship, sports, artistic and creative areas. Refer to the links below, for more information of the JPSAE!

As most of the information for JAE could be found on your JAE booklet (please read it thoroughly!!!), I am hoping that I am providing information which are easily left out!

Lastly, last words for you fresh GCE O Level holders, try not to stress yourself over the JAE alright!  I have always believed in the quote by Steve Jobs, “Trust that the dots will somehow connect in the future, because believing that the dots will connect down the road will give you the confidence to follow your heart even when it leads you off the well-worn path.”

Student Feature 1: Kelvin Wang

Hello and welcome to heardatdmc’s first student feature of the year! Every two weeks or so, we will showcase one of DMC’s many bright and promising students. The DMC Student of the Week is Kelvin Wang, year 2 DMC student.

DMC STUDENT OF THE WEEK: KELVIN WANG

Kelvin is a Design & Illustration student who boasts an impressive portfolio of visual creations. He is the head of One Degree, SP’s very own advertising agency. One Degree’s clients include SP’s School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The agency is also working on a campaign for DMC’s very own GOMAD project.

The design works of this artistic youth are sighted all over the CASS block. Besides visual and graphic design, Kelvin is also interested in photography.

KELVIN SPEAKS

“Hi, I’m Kelvin. Like many of my friends, I spend too much time watching TV shows and films. What’s worse is that I love to eat while I watch them. Actually I eat all the time and often too much for my own good.

I secretly hope to become an actor and maybe even win an Academy award. If that doesn’t work out, I guess I’ll then get into advertising! I am really interested in taking pictures too. I try my best to learn a little more about photography every time I have a camera on hand.
I love traveling (even though I haven’t been to many places). I can’t wait to the see the world.
Oh, and I love my friends & family (I’m only including this so that when I get them to read this feature they’ll feel included in my tiny little success of getting featured)”

Kelvin has even created work for external organisations! This is an outdoor ad for the ‘ CARE I RUN’ campaign

Interesting snapshots Kelvin has taken

Kelvin is a good example of the kind of creative talent SP DMC produces. However he has stood out as a DMC student even in less artistic conquests. Once a week, he moonlights as a DJ for SPACE Radio, SP’s very own radio station. Kelvin is the co-host of an entertaining radio show called ‘Forking Fridays’!

On top of that, he was part of the student group who conceptualised the theme for this year’s SPMCC, Click to Connect. Kelvin was also a member of the top research group in a project investigating the practice of Citizen Journalism among Youths. He and his group mates will have the chance to present their findings to the media during SPMCC itself (stay tuned to find out more!)

MORE ABOUT KELVIN

Alma Mater:
Queenstown Secondary School

Favourite thing about DMC:
“It has definitely got to be the wonderful people who I’ve gotten to know thus far!”

Favourite SP Food Stall:
“Food Court 3’s Japanese stall! Simply because the ramen tastes really good (most of the time)”

Favourite SP Hangout:
“I don’t spend much time studying in school but my favourite hangout would be Food Court 5! It’s one of my favourite places in school because my friends and I have conquered many projects together there”

QUOTE OF THE WEEK

“There might always be people around who make you feel inadequate or like you are worth less. There could even be people who make you ask yourself why you even bother. I FEEL THAT WAY EVERDAY! But you know what? It’s completely fine. What’s most important is that you never give up working towards what you want!”

With such optimism and drive, it’s no wonder Kelvin is heardatdmc’s very first featured student.
Those interested in pursuing creative direction like Kelvin should definitely find out more about SP’s Diploma in Media and Communication. Keep reading to find out more about the outstanding students of our course!

New Year Resolutions and How to Make Them Stay

By now, most of us are slowing inching away from our new years resolution made only weeks ago. Many people have trouble keeping up with their New Year resolutions once the year starts to become busy. Because of that the same top 5 New Year resolutions pop up every year. Here is a list of 3 of the most common New Year resolutions and how to make sure they last throughout the year.

1)   Lose weight
There are many variations of this: get healthy, work out, lose the bulge. Essentially all that holiday partying ends up as layers of fat sitting on your tummy. And by the time the work year starts, there’s just no more time for all that exercise we promised we would do.

One way to keep this resolution is to watch your food, because you are what you eat. General consensus would dictate that the less active you are the less food you should consumer. Also start taking note of what kinds of food you eat in a day. Awareness is the first step to solving any problem. However, self-starvation and crash-dieting is definitely not the way to go.

Solving any problems starts with taking small steps, literally. Take the stairs on your way to and fro home. While it may not seem like much, results would show once you’re done with this routine by next years new year resolution.

2
2)   Learn something new

When was the last time you tried something new? Learning a new skill helps you socially and boosts your self esteem. Unfortunately most of us do a quick google search about the new skill we would dream of acquiring and end it with the google search itself

The trick to sticking by your endeavour to learn new things is to do it with others. When you partake an activity with a group of friends or a partner, you tend to be committed for longer. This is because you commit to not only the new skill, but also your friendship. Be there to support each other and learning new things would be more fun.

3) Enjoy life more

This is not a JOKE.  Yes, you’re busy but you need time for yourself too.
All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy and Jane a dull girl. Learn to take in all the beauty in life and enjoy life even when at work.

One way to make sure you get to enjoy life more is to give yourself little rewards for a job well done. Enjoy a good DVD over the weekend or treat yourself to a nice meal because you deserve it for working so hard. This means that you get to do work, and you get to enjoy yourself!

The key to keeping your New Year Resolution is to make time for your yourself. Learning to organise your time well will go a long way!

I Like ... New Beginnings

Chapter One: The Agency

They say to “look with favour upon a bold beginning.” Well, the Singapore Polytechnic Diploma in Media and Communication (SP DMC) course has certainly taken an outstanding step forward this year.

Along with the start of this year, DMC has launched its creative new learning space, The Agency, a student integrated marketing communication agency! Let’s not forget the brilliant partnership DMC has established with the Starcom Mediavest Group, one of the largest brand communication groups in the world.

With such exciting developments taking place right now, it is no wonder DMC has made several media impressions online.

Firstly, AsiaOne, an information portal of the Singapore Press Holdings features an article on how SP has created revolutionary learning spaces such as The Agency for its DMC students!

In addition, online Media magazine “CampaignSingapore” and “Marketing” business magazine, features how our very own SP DMC students will be under the mentorship of the Starcom MediaVest Group.

The Agency was also recently featured on STOMP's Youthphoria section, where The Agency was extensively talked about in detail.

As a student of the SP DMC course, I feel the pride and burning anticipation at how these new beginnings of my course are taking off so well. With the launch of the new working space, I cannot help but imagine myself making full use of the creative learning space as much as possible, before I leave the school!

It is also heartening to know of how the new DMC students will stand to gain from the impressive changes made by the school.

SP DMC has indeed made a bold beginning this year, I am looking forward to the positive impact such changes will make on DMC as a whole. I like fresh starts, I like such great, new beginnings.
