Whether on the road, mugging over coffee,
or jogging round a park, odds are, you’re listening to the voice of your
favourite radio DJ as they chat and play music. It can be hard to imagine being
able to step into their shoes, but at DMC, students are given the chance to do
just that.
Second year student, Nerissa Tiong is the
Deputy Network Director of Space Radio, SP’s very own radio station. Every
Tuesday she goes on air with her show, “Top of the Menu”, where she explores
all sorts of cuisine.
However, Nerissa didn’t always plan to be a
DJ. After joining space a designer, she found herself selected to move from
behind the scenes, to the microphone.
Nonetheless, Nerissa is glad for the
change, as being a Space Radio DJ has opened up a whole bundle of opportunities
for her. So far, the most significant of those opportunities was having the
chance to attend the Jessie J Press Conference. She was able to ask Jessie J a
few questions up close, describing the experience as once-in-a-lifetime.

According to Nerissa, being live on Air is
one of the most exciting things about being a DJ. Even so, one has to be careful of being swept
up in the moment and saying the wrong thing.
This is why the script is such an important part of the show, Nerissa
says, emphasising that it is vital that the script is written properly.
Of course, being a radio DJ now doesn’t
mean that there is only way to go from here out. With many aspiring young DJs
emerging, the competition is fast and furious, with only the best of the best
making it big. However, Nerissa would jump at the chance to work behind the
scenes where she first started off.
“Being a producer could be fun too,” she
says, “the radio industry would be an avenue that I will certainly explore into
after I finish my studies.”
